Funeral Scripture Readings

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.”

This reading speaks about the reality that God chooses the time when things happen.  This includes the time of death.  The acceptance of this message helps to make it easier for those who are left behind to move on with their own lives.

Psalm 23:1, 4
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

This reading states that if a person puts his faith in God, he need not fear anything including death.  

Psalm 48:14
“For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.”

This reading states that God is eternal and omnipresent.  He will be there to guide us until we die.

John 11:25-26
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”"

This reading states that Jesus is the resurrection and the lifeAll his believers who obey Him are assured that they will have life after death.

John 6:56
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.”

This reading says that all who communes with Him in the Holy Eucharist will be raised and will live forever when the right time comes.

Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

This reading states that at the right time, there will no longer be mourning because the Lord will wipe out death.

1 Thessalonians 4:17
“After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together thru the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.  And so we will be with the Lord forever”.

This reading is more detailed in its description of the reunion of the dead loved one and the bereaved.
