Funeral Readings For Mother
John 14: 1-4
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
This reading tells us how Jesus is preparing us a place in his Father’s kingdom. It tells us not to fear for those who are diseased are celebrating with him in the Father’s house that has many rooms. It is also through Jesus Christ that we are able to enter those rooms because it is through his life and example we have the ability to enter God’s kingdom.
“But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.”
This reading tells us that death is inherently human. When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit from the tree of knowledge, they opened us up to death. But, Christ has been sent to redeem us from Original Sin and through him we will be resurrected.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”
Funeral readings for mother often speak about the reality that God chooses the time when things happen. This funeral reading shows us that God also chooses the time of death. The acceptance of this message helps to make it easier for those who are left behind to move on with their own lives.
“For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.”
This emphasizes the importance of respecting our parents not only on our day-to-day dealings with them while they are still alive but by also not forgetting them upon their death. It also reminds us that we should commemorate their lives by following their examples, keeping them in our hearts and remembering them occasionally. By living a life that they would approve of, then we are celebrating the efforts that they’ve made and the lives they’ve led.
