The Value Of Grief Counseling

Grief is a set of emotions experienced as a result of the loss of something or someone each person values. It is experienced in differing degrees based on the significance of the loss. The loss of a loved one due to death can lead one to experience emotions so deep that he/she becomes unable to cope. This is why it is important to understand the function of bereavement counseling.

Grief counseling is a form of therapy that helps one to recognize the different stages of the grieving process and develop systems for coping with the feelings that go with them. Its primary focus is on helping the person to experience the emotions he/she is feeling rather than try to suppress them. Suppression can lead one to a state of mental or physical illness.

There are two essential types of therapeutic counsel styles available. The first is one-on-one therapy where the grieving person meets with a counselor in private. The counselor attempts to help the person identify the feelings he/she is experiencing and find ways to turn these to constructive uses rather than self destruction. The goal is to help the individual develop his/her own methods of coping with the loss and getting his/her life back to something that resembles normalcy.

The other type of counseling is group therapy. Here, a group of individuals who are experiencing similar losses, such as the loss of a parent, spouse, or child, come together and discuss what they are feeling and how they are each dealing.

There is normally a moderator or grief counselor present who is trained in helping people to open up and express themselves. This person may offer up suggestions for discussion or attempt to elicit more open responses from group members who are reticent.

Both of these types of sadness counseling are available in traditional settings or online. Traditional settings tend to work better for groups and individuals who have a difficult time opening up to others. There is more personal contact with the counselor and/or others with similar experiences who can offer a truly sympathetic ear and useful advice on different coping mechanisms.

Online grief counseling may be excellent for an individual who is normally capable of working through strong emotions alone. Here, the person expresses what he/she is feeling online via email or chat with a grief counselor. In some cases, one may even be able to locate chat rooms that have been set up for group therapy sessions. The main difference is that there is no face-to-face contact, making this a less than ideal method for those who prefer or need the closeness of others.

Grief counseling is not always necessary. Some people are able to develop their own coping mechanisms that allow them to get on with their lives following a major loss. However, it has been proven to be beneficial for anyone in that it can help facilitate a speedier recovery and guide one through the stages of loss in a controlled manner that helps them to maintain their mental and emotional health.
